Screen Time in Schools: Finding the Right Balance at Ranches Primary School
Screens are now as common in classrooms as pencils and glue sticks. But with growing concerns about attention spans, sleep, online safety, and cognitive development, many parents are asking an important question: what does healthy screen use actually look like in school?
In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer was joined by Della Baria, Head of Digital Learning, Ranches Primary School, to explore how technology can be used with purpose, without compromising play, movement, and real-world connection.
Della explained that at Ranches Primary, technology is introduced thoughtfully and progressively. Children from Nursery to Year 2 focus primarily on play-based learning, communication skills, and hands-on development, with iPads introduced from Year 3 onwards. Even then, devices are only used when there is a clear educational purpose.
A key theme throughout the discussion was the difference between passive screen time and purposeful digital learning. Della emphasised that technology should enhance learning, allowing pupils to create, problem-solve, and develop skills that would not be possible without digital tools. At Ranches, teachers are guided by the PICRAT framework, which encourages the use of technology for creation and transformation rather than simple replacement.
Online safety is also central to the school’s approach. Pupils receive regular safety lessons, learning about responsible digital behaviour, age-appropriate apps, and the importance of reporting concerns to a trusted adult. These conversations are reinforced through open communication with parents, recognising that digital literacy is a shared responsibility between school and home.
Ultimately, the discussion highlighted the importance of intentionality. Technology is not used for the sake of innovation or headlines, but as a carefully considered tool within a broader educational philosophy that values childhood, emotional development, and human connection.
For families navigating screen use at home, the episode offered reassurance and practical insight: focus on purpose over time spent, maintain balance, talk openly about online safety, and remember that meaningful learning happens both on and off screen.
