Why Play Continues to Matter as Children Grow Older
In a recent episode of Eye on Education on Dubai Eye 103.8, Amy Hughes, Assistant Principal at Ranches Primary School, discussed why play remains a vital part of children’s learning, wellbeing and emotional development beyond the early years.
Amy explained that while play evolves as children grow, its purpose remains the same. Through active and hands-on learning, children continue to develop collaboration, problem-solving, communication and resilience, supporting both academic learning and personal growth.
The conversation also explored play as a tool for emotional expression, allowing teachers to better understand behaviour and support pupils who may feel unsettled or overwhelmed. Amy highlighted the importance of knowing when to guide play and when to step back, giving children space to explore, take risks and build independence.
She also addressed parental concerns around academic pressure, noting that play supports learning rather than competing with it. Time for creativity, boredom and unstructured exploration helps children manage expectations and build confidence.
Overall, the episode highlighted the importance of play in helping children manage stress, build life skills and grow into confident, capable learners.
