Extended periods of online learning can bring challenges for families, from managing screen time to maintaining motivation and balance at home. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Steve Arnold, Principal of Ranches Primary School, to explore how schools and parents can work together to support children during this time.

Steve highlighted the importance of prioritising wellbeing and maintaining strong connections between pupils, teachers and families, particularly as children navigate different home environments and routines. He discussed the need for realistic expectations, especially for younger learners, where shorter, play-based activities and regular breaks can make learning more effective and enjoyable.

For parents, Steve offered practical advice: take the pressure off, communicate openly with teachers, and allow space for breaks when needed. He also shared strategies to manage screen fatigue, including encouraging offline tasks and creative activities.

While acknowledging the challenges, Steve reflected on the positive skills children are developing, such as independence and resilience. This conversation offers reassurance and practical guidance to help families navigate online learning with confidence and balance.
