Homework is a topic that sparks debate in many households. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Steve Arnold, Principal of Ranches Primary School, about their approach to homework in primary years.

Steve explained the school’s “light touch” policy, emphasising that tasks should be manageable, meaningful, and purposeful. He highlighted that traditional homework often has limited impact on young learners’ attainment and stressed the importance of timely feedback.

The conversation also explored the power of reading and language at home. Studies show children read to regularly are far more likely to excel in literacy, while shared reading and play build imagination, empathy, and family bonding. Steve encouraged parents to focus on these rich, interactive learning experiences rather than conventional homework.

Parents can take comfort in knowing that simple everyday interactions like reading together, talking, and playing, can have a powerful and lasting impact on their child’s growth and love of learning.
