Sustainability is more than recycling bins and switching off lights, it is about shaping lasting habits and values. On a recent episode of Eye on Education with Helen Farmer, Miss Audrey Grossemy, Sustainability Lead and French Teacher at Ranches Primary School, shared how her students are taking the lead in making eco-friendly choices part of daily school life.

Audrey explained that the aim is to make sustainability engaging and meaningful. Initiatives such as the “Sustainability Squad,” student-led recycling projects, uniform swap boutiques, and waste-free challenges show how children can design creative solutions that influence not only their school but their families as well. By making small changes playful, from basketball hoop recycling bins to second-hand fashion, pupils feel ownership and pride in their impact.

She also highlighted her own commitment to living sustainably, from supporting local farmers and choosing natural products to reducing waste and reusing clothing. These everyday practices demonstrate how individual choices connect to wider environmental goals.

The discussion showed that when sustainability is approached with imagination and joy, young people gain confidence, inspire their communities, and begin to see themselves as decision-makers of the future.
