Key Stage 2

KEY STAGE 2 AT RPS

A time of significant change, a time of preparing for even greater change.

Key Stage 2 (KS2) at Ranches Primary School covers four years, from Year 3 to Year 6, and represents a considerable period of change for a child in school. To best support our pupils, we divide KS2 into Lower KS2 (Years 3 and 4) and Upper KS2 (Years 5 and 6). The challenges children encounter and the skills and habits they need to develop in each of these stages are quite distinct. Our teachers foster an environment that best supports children's needs during these phases of their development as students and individuals.

EDUCATIONAL APPROACH: LOWER KEY STAGE 2

In Lower KS2, our focus is on building a strong foundation in core subjects while also fostering creativity and critical thinking skills. As children get used to more formal teaching habits, our teachers support the development of independent learning skills they'll need to succeed in Upper KS2. At this stage, pupils begin to figure out how they learn best and start to actively manage their own learning.

EDUCATIONAL APPROACH: UPPER KEY STAGE 2

In Upper KS2, children are encouraged to take more responsibility for their own learning, to think critically and creatively, and to develop skills in communication, cooperation, and problem-solving. Being seniors in the school, children are provided with opportunities to take leadership roles and to be role models for the younger children. They are prepared to undertake the transition to secondary education, which typically involves a shift towards greater independence and self-directed learning.

KEY STAGE 2 FACILITIES

Learning environments at KS2 include classrooms, corridors, outside spaces, a well-being garden, a science lab, and a computer room. Children can work where they feel comfortable and trusted to do their work without being confined to the classroom. In addition to the in-school facilities, we also take advantage of external facilities to enhance learning and personal development. These include Ecoventure, school trips linked to learning, and sporting competitions. This variety of spaces and experiences contributes to a well-rounded education for our KS2 students.

TRANSITION TO SECONDARY SCHOOL

To ensure a smooth transfer to secondary school, we undertake considerable preparatory work during Years 5 and 6. Our efforts focus on cultivating strong friendships and partnerships for our pupils to transition alongside, as well as fostering resilience and adaptability to prepare them for the challenges of attending larger schools with older students. As a result, our students have an excellent track record of gaining admission to their first-choice secondary schools.
